Two $500 scholarships will be awarded during 2021 by the Marie Maxey Foundation to honor Ruby Carpenter Jones for 41 years of teaching in the Mississippi Delta. These scholarships will be open to any youth that has been accepted or is attending Delta State University and majoring in education.
Ruby Carpenter grew up in Webster County, Mississippi, with the dream of becoming a teacher. With the help of her family and through her own determination, she achieved that dream with a degree from Delta State University. The Marie Maxey Foundation wants to help other future teachers achieve their dream by providing two $500 scholarships during 2021.
The scholarship application will consist of proof of enrollment or attendance along with a 500-word or less essay on the impact the Lord has had in your life and what vision God has given you for the future. All things being equal, preference will be given to members of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international education organization.
A $500 scholarship to help Latino youth with higher education costs was awarded on January 1, 2021. This grant was given in memory of Christopher Goughnour, who was born in Brazil and lived with his U.S. foreign service family in several countries prior to graduating from high school and moving to the United States. As a dual U.S.-Brazilian citizen, Chris cherished his international background, but also took enormous pride in serving the United States in both the U.S. Navy --and after college-- as a highly decorated U.S. Army Ranger stationed in Afghanistan. Chris was taken from this world in 2018, having suffered a heart attack while pursuing one of his greatest passions, deep-water diving. His memory lives on in his parents, wife and two children, brothers, and comrades in arms.
The Chris Goughnour Scholarship will be awarded in August 2021 This scholarship is open to Latino youth that have been accepted to a two or four year college in the United States. Please submit proof of college admission or current enrollment along with a 500 word or less essay on "The Most Important Person in My Life" to michael@maxeys.org by August 15, 2021. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to the young person providing the winning essay on August 31, 2020. We also request that each applicant sign up for Bing Giving and list the Marie Maxey Foundation as your charity. Instructions for signing up for Bing Giving are here. We seek to support youth that need support with their higher education costs and are focused on giving light to the world.
